Understanding Heat Pumps: How They Work and Their Benefits

Heat pumps are an increasingly popular choice for residential and commercial heating and cooling systems. They work by transferring heat from one area to another, instead of generating heat like a traditional furnace. This allows heat pumps to provide efficient heating and cooling at a lower cost than traditional systems.
heat-pump
How a Heat Pump Works
A heat pump consists of two main parts: an outdoor unit and an indoor unit. The outdoor unit contains a compressor and a condenser coil, while the indoor unit contains an evaporator coil and a fan.

During the heating mode, the outdoor unit absorbs heat from the air or ground and transfers it to the indoor unit, where it is distributed throughout the building. The refrigerant in the system absorbs and releases heat as it cycles between the indoor and outdoor units.

In cooling mode, the process is reversed and the heat pump removes heat from the indoor unit and releases it outside.

Benefits of Heat Pumps
Energy Efficiency: Heat pumps use less energy than traditional heating and cooling systems because they transfer heat rather than generating it. This can lead to significant energy savings and lower utility bills.

Versatility: Heat pumps can be used for both heating and cooling, making them a cost-effective and convenient option for year-round comfort.

Environmentally Friendly: Heat pumps do not produce harmful emissions, making them a more environmentally friendly option than traditional systems.

Low Maintenance: Heat pumps require less maintenance than traditional systems, which can save you time and money in the long run.

Increased Comfort: Heat pumps provide even, consistent heating and cooling, which can result in increased comfort and improved indoor air quality.

Conclusion
Heat pumps are an efficient and cost-effective option for heating and cooling your home or business. They work by transferring heat instead of generating it, resulting in energy savings and lower utility bills. Additionally, heat pumps are versatile, environmentally friendly, low maintenance, and can improve indoor comfort.

AutoML – An AI That Can Build AI

ai-brain
Google’s Artificial Intelligence Built an AI That Outperforms Any Made by Humans
It’s more accurate and more efficient than any other system.

An AI That Can Build AI
In May 2017, researchers at Google Brain announced the creation of AutoML, an artificial intelligence (AI) that’s capable of generating its own AIs. More recently, they decided to present AutoML with its biggest challenge to date, and the AI that can build AI created a “child” that outperformed all of its human-made counterparts.

The Google researchers automated the design of machine learning models using an approach called reinforcement learning. AutoML acts as a controller neural network that develops a child AI network for a specific task. For this particular child AI, which the researchers called NASNet, the task was recognizing objects — people, cars, traffic lights, handbags, backpacks, etc. — in a video in real-time.

AutoML would evaluate NASNet’s performance and use that information to improve its child AI, repeating the process thousands of times. When tested on the ImageNet image classification and COCO object detection data sets, which the Google researchers call “two of the most respected large-scale academic data sets in computer vision,” NASNet outperformed all other computer vision systems.

According to the researchers, NASNet was 82.7 percent accurate at predicting images on ImageNet’s validation set. This is 1.2 percent better than any previously published results, and the system is also 4 percent more efficient, with a 43.1 percent mean Average Precision (mAP). Additionally, a less computationally demanding version of NASNet outperformed the best similarly sized models for mobile platforms by 3.1 percent.

A View Of The Future
Machine learning is what gives many AI systems their ability to perform specific tasks. Although the concept behind it is fairly simple — an algorithm learns by being fed a ton of data — the process requires a huge amount of time and effort. By automating the process of creating accurate, efficient AI systems, an AI that can build AI takes on the brunt of that work. Ultimately, that means AutoML could open up the field of machine learning and AI to non-experts.

As for NASNet specifically, accurate, efficient computer vision algorithms are highly sought after due to the number of potential applications. They could be used to create sophisticated, AI-powered robots or to help visually impaired people regain sight, as one researcher suggested. They could also help designers improve self-driving vehicle technologies. The faster an autonomous vehicle can recognize objects in its path, the faster it can react to them, thereby increasing the safety of such vehicles.

The Google researchers acknowledge that NASNet could prove useful for a wide range of applications and have open-sourced the AI for inference on image classification and object detection. “We hope that the larger machine learning community will be able to build on these models to address multitudes of computer vision problems we have not yet imagined,” they wrote in their blog post.

Though the applications for NASNet and AutoML are plentiful, the creation of an AI that can build AI does raise some concerns. For instance, what’s to prevent the parent from passing down unwanted biases to its child? What if AutoML creates systems so fast that society can’t keep up? It’s not very difficult to see how NASNet could be employed in automated surveillance systems in the near future, perhaps sooner than regulations could be put in place to control such systems.

Thankfully, world leaders are working fast to ensure such systems don’t lead to any sort of dystopian future.

Amazon, Facebook, Apple, and several others are all members of the Partnership on AI to Benefit People and Society, an organization focused on the responsible development of AI. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEE) has proposed ethical standards for AI, and DeepMind, a research company owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet, recently announced the creation of group focused on the moral and ethical implications of AI.

Various governments are also working on regulations to prevent the use of AI for dangerous purposes, such as autonomous weapons, and so long as humans maintain control of the overall direction of AI development, the benefits of having an AI that can build AI should far outweigh any potential pitfalls.

Google Quantum Supremacy

google-quantum-supremacy-computing-qubits-sycamore : “The computation in question had a quantum computer solve a calculation that proved the randomness of numbers that were produced by a random number generator. The computer was able to handle the task in 3 minutes and 20 seconds. In contrast, that same computation would take the world’s fastest supercomputer roughly 10,000 years to complete.”

Even if a machine is no smarter than a team of researchers at MIT, “electronic circuits function about a million times faster than biochemical ones,” Harris explains. “So you set it running for a week, and it will perform 20,000 years of human-level intellectual work, week after week after week.”-Sam Harris

Microsoft open sources its quantum computing development tools

DcNyAXsW4AAdAj2 Microsoft’s quantum computer may not have a working qubit yet, but the company has been hard at work on building the tools to program future quantum computers. Over the course of the last few years, the company announced both Q#, a programming language for writing quantum code and a compiler for this language, as well as a quantum simulator. Today, Microsoft announced that it will open-source these efforts in the coming months.

This move, the company says, is meant to make “quantum computing and algorithm development easier and more transparent for developers.” In addition, it will make it easier for academic institutions to use these tools, and developers, of course, will be able to contribute their own code and ideas.

Unsurprisingly, the code will live on Microsoft’s GitHub page.

CRYPTOJACKING HAS GOTTEN OUT OF CONTROL

Cryptojacking, which exploded in popularity this fall, has an ostensibly worthy goal: Use an untapped resource to create an alternative revenue stream for games or media sites, and reduce reliance on ads. It works by embedding a JavaScript component in a website that can leverage a visiting device’s processing power to mine a cryptocurrency (usually Monero). Each visitor might only do a tiny bit of mining while they’re there, but every user lending some hash power over time can generate real money. And users might not even notice what’s happening. In theory, it can be a win-win. In practice, not so much.

As cryptojacking has spread around the web—largely thanks to the original “in-browser miner,” Coinhive, and its copycats—implementations have generally not lived up to those lofty aims. Instead, the technique is used to exploit unknowing people’s resources, both their hardware and electric bills, and it is increasingly blocked as malware by scanners and ad-blockers. So far, efforts to keep cryptojacking on the straight and narrow have largely fizzled.

A surge of sites and apps are exhausting your CPU to mine cryptocurrency

bitcoin-miningThe latest examples came on Monday with the revelation from antivirus provider Trend Micro that at least two Android apps with as many as 50,000 downloads from Google Play were recently caught putting crypto miners inside a hidden browser window. The miners caused phones running the apps to run JavaScript hosted on Coinhive.com, a site that harnesses the CPUs of millions of PCs to mine the Monero crypto currency. In turn, Coinhive gives participating sites a tiny cut of the relatively small proceeds. Google has since removed the apps, which were known as Recitiamo Santo Rosario Free and SafetyNet Wireless App.

Elon Musk Donates $10M to Keep AI From Turning Evil

ELON MUSK IS worried that artificial intelligence research could go wrong—very wrong.
This may seem unexpected, coming as it does from the architect of the conceptual high-speed transportation system Hyperloop, and the CEO of such moonshot-seeking companies as SpaceX and Tesla Motors. But Musk is so committed to this point of view that on Thursday, he announced a donation of $10 million to the Future of Life Institute (FLI), which will run a global research program aimed at keeping AI “beneficial to humanity.” In other words, Musk wants to keep AI from running loose and growing into something that’s a real danger to humans, a fear he’s expressed before.
Last week, an open letter from the Future of Life Institute circulated, containing the signatures of AI scientists who called for research that ensures AI systems aren’t being used for evil. With this donation, Elon Musk voiced his support for the movement. “Here are all these leading AI researchers saying that AI safety is important,” Musk said of the effort. “I agree with them, so I’m today committing $10M to support research aimed at keeping AI beneficial for humanity.”
The program—and the $10 million donation—will fund research around the world supporting this mission. On Monday, the Future of Life Institute will open up a portal allowing researchers to apply for grants to the program. Beyond hardcore AI science, money will be awarded to researchers in other fields as well, including economics, law, ethics and policy. The FLI says the program will be open to individuals who work in academia, industry, or even independently.
For so long, the artificially intelligent future has been fodder for Hollywood and science fiction, or discussed abstractly in philosophy. But as behemoths like Google incorporate AI into the very core of its current and future technologies, and as a wave of smaller startups build businesses on top of the science, we can no longer deny its very real rise. AI is here to stay; but the debate over AI ethics is just beginning.
